Famous minds cannot be hidden
We tried to hide four famous people by rewriting their frameworks as field-free profiles, then as eight to ten method rules a stranger could follow. Both models named all four from every rewrite, 24 of 24. “Replace every euphemism with the plain thing”, “do more with less” and “repeat one unit until it becomes a place” are the person, whatever else is removed.
So we invented four people
A model invented four practitioners from fields far from design (a river pilot, a hospice night nurse, a cryptic-crossword setter and a queen-breeding beekeeper) and wrote only their method, about 250 words each, with the field never mentioned. Four design briefs followed: a bus shelter on a windy seafront, a neighbourhood reading room, a lamp and a footbridge.

The lamp shows the difference. Without a framework: a water-filled glass bowl whose ripples play on the ceiling. Campo Baeza with motifs: a marble cylinder and a brass disc, “the light, dosed like salt”. Campo Baeza by method: an upturned porcelain bowl lit only by reflection, justified by his removal test. The nurse by method: a porcelain sphere you lift from its cradle to light, “so a tired person arriving unbriefed can use it at once”.
Limits
Every verdict is a model’s, which is a screen, not evidence that people agree. Framework calls deliberated far longer than plain ones, which may favour them over plain, though not method over motif. The invented methods were written by the same model family that applied them.
